What is red light therapy? Elite Sports Clubs has been offering red light therapy for many years, but if you have not tried it yourself, you may not know much about it. Learn about red light therapy and the numerous medical benefits it provides.

What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy is a form of light treatment for the skin. You lie in a specialized enclosed light bed that looks just like a tanning bed. The bed exposes your skin to low levels of red light (visible) or near-infrared light (wavelengths that are invisible to the eye but your body can feel as heat) at very specific wavelengths that trigger a biological response. Two wavelengths of red light in particular—660 nanometers and 850 nanometers—deliver the best biological response, explains Michael Hamblin, M.D., an associate professor at Harvard Medical School. These wavelengths are not harmful to the body like UV light, which is at the opposite end of the light spectrum. In fact, just the opposite is true.

This treatment encourages your body to naturally produce enzymes, elastin fibers, and collagen that support the skin’s structure. Thus, producing a younger, smoother, and firmer feeling skin. Infrared Light Technology has been extensively researched and used by NASA, Mayo Clinic, National Institutes of Health, the US Military, and many more organizations worldwide.

What Results to Expect (First 4 Weeks)

It is recommended that red light therapy treatment be ongoing to see effective results (see below). Initially, you’ll notice fine lines start to diminish, your skin will have a much smoother feeling to it, pigmentation will start to even out, and any blemishes or acne will start diminishing.

Long-Term Results (4-12 Weeks)

Over time, improved oxygenation and detoxification of the skin is achieved as the vascular walls of the skin’s small blood vessels are strengthened, followed by improved natural repair and creation of healthy skin. This will help restore and firm up tired looking skin, decrease fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, diminish freckles, age spots, eliminate acne, even out pigmentation, minimize the size of facial pores, improve the appearance of sun-weathered skin, and stimulate collagen synthesis. Overall improving the skin’s underlying supportive structure and making you look and feel years younger!
