We like to think that when we finish a workout it’s time for a treat. An ice cream, a chocolate bar, a burrito, you name it. But the real reward doesn’t have to be tangible, in fact, it’s just the opposite.
The finish line should be a reward in itself.
When you place the focus of a workout on a treat, you forget the purpose of the actual workout. The workout is for YOU.
YOU want to feel better, YOU want to look better, YOU want to reap all of the benefits of being healthy. A good workout or keeping up with your nutrition plan gives you the greatest gift anyone could want, a healthier life.
How do you get there?
It’s easy to dangle a tangible treat in front of yourself to help get things going. But instead of bribing yourself, try encouraging yourself. One way to do this is by using experiences as a way to keep yourself going.
A great way to do this is with a Motivation Jar. So, if you have a good workout stick $1 in the jar. Also, if you skip over a fast food meal for a quick healthy meal, stick $2 in the jar. When you’re done, use that money for a fun trip or adventure. Using the money for a good experience instead of a material object can boost your motivation levels and won’t send confusing reward signals to your brain.
How a tangible item doesn’t stack up to experience.
A tangible item won’t always make you the happiest. Sure getting a new swim suit or pair of jeans feels awesome after all your hard work, but that’s just an accessory to your accomplishments.
Being able to take a hike with the family, feeling more comfortable around the pool with friends, or enjoying a healthy meal together make that finish line sweet. You’ve worked so hard to get in shape and take charge of your health, so celebrate with good experiences.
A chocolate bar only lasts a few minutes, a memory can last a lifetime.
So when it comes to your workout or nutrition plan, place that finish line reward where it really counts, and enjoy a healthy and happy life.Subscribe to our Weekly Blog Digest
