Learning to Cook with Grains

Learning to Cook with Grains

Many people love to try eating several of the New Grain Products available on the market! However, when it comes to preparing them at home it can be difficult figuring out how to cook and serve them just right. So, here are some suggestions!

BOIL, POUR, BOIL

Preparing in a large saucepan is probably the easiest method of cooking. Bring water to a boil, add the grain, then return to a boil before reducing the heat to a simmer.

REDUCE, COVER, SIMMER

Reduce the heat, pop on a tight-fitting lid, then simmer the grains for the indicated time on package.

TEST IT OUT

Testing grains is very important. Do so before removing grains from the heat. When are they done? Most grains are done when they taste slightly chewy but hold their shape.

FLUFF IT UP

Once all the water is absorbed, use a fork to fluff the grains. Then remove the saucepan from the heat and let it hang out for 15 minutes (untouched) before digging in.

Learning to prepare your own grains will be a huge asset as you are learning to cook healthier dishes and adding to your recipe repertoire. Please feel free to schedule a nutrition consultation with our registered dietitian with ANY questions you have. We’re here to help!
