Staff Stories: Scott Eigenberg Shares His "Ah ha" Moment

Our members aren’t the only ones working towards goals and striving to become a better version of themselves. Elite Sports Clubs staff share some of their own stories about their health & fitness successes.

I actually remember vividly my “ah ha” moment. A lot of you might know what I’m talking about. You’re constantly busy at work and with family and home obligations. You know you want and need to get active, but you just are not completely ready to make it a priority.

Because that is the key, of course. We all can easily come up with the same excuses.

  • “I don’t have any time”
  • “I don’t have any money”
  • “I’m too busy”
  • “I’ll do it later”

But you never know when that “ah ha” moment will suddenly click. When you look at yourself in the mirror and you KNOW it’s time. Time to do something and STOP making excuses.

Because the bottom line is this:

“IF YOU WANT IT, YOU WILL FIND A WAY…IF YOU DON’T, YOU WILL FIND AN EXCUSE.”

For me, my moment was when I agreed to play in a friend’s rec basketball league a few years after college.

Now basketball is and was my first love. I have played since I was 3 years old. I used to be that player that no one wanted to guard because I would RUN! I would run up and down that court and make the defense chase me around. That was always my advantage. I wasn’t the biggest, or most athletic, but you had to work against me.

And of course to gain that advantage I had to workout. I would run and lift and was very active.

But after college I “got busy.” I had my first real job and routinely worked till 8PM. A few years past and I didn’t completely go to nothing, but I MAYBE got to the gym once a week for a quick cardio routine.

I didn’t put on a ton of weight, but I just was out of shape.

You don’t realize how much you have really lost of yourself sometimes, so when my friend asked me to play in his league, little did I know that this would be my moment…

The first game was a WAKE UP CALL. I just couldn’t do it anymore. I used to pass and make that hard cut to the hoop, but I was out of breath. I used to sprint down the court when our team got the ball and look for the deep outlet or easy lay-up. My mind told me to get my butt down the court! But I just couldn’t get myself to do it anymore.

“I’m still young,” I told myself. “I couldn’t have peaked already?!?”

It was right then and there that I resolved to get back into playing shape. I wanted to feel what it was like to be that player no one wanted to guard again.

I started off with just 2 days a week doing spin, stairs, and lifting. I started to regain my form. I gradually added on more and more to my schedule. I started taking some classes and playing more basketball as well. Eventually I was doing intense interval training. The key was making it all a part of my routine and lifestyle.

I was back!!!!

But it all started from that one spark. That one “ah ha” moment.

You never know when it will come, but you have to be ready for it or it will pass you by…

It could be looking at your kids and wanting to be active with them. It could be a doctor’s visit that gives you some humbling news. It might be a life change such as losing a job or ending a relationship. It might even be an innocuous comment by an old friend.
