5 Reasons Not to Be Scared of Indoor Cycling

5 Reasons Not to Be Scared of Indoor Cycling

Johnny G started “spinning”, or indoor cycling classes, in the mid 80’s. Ever since, people have been sweating, breathing hard, losing weight, and gaining fitness taking an imaginary ride on a stationary bike. Some see it as a class for the hardcore fitness enthusiast with no room for mercy. If you are reserved to give it a try, I am here to tell is a great class for just about anybody! Here are 5 reasons not to be scared of indoor cycling classes.

1. Instructors are there to help.

Yes, indoor cycling can be intense, very intense, and that can be intimidating for some. But it is also fun, VERY FUN! For those that have never joined an indoor cycling or “spinning” class before, make sure you go about 15 minutes in advance and talk to the instructor. It’ll give you the opportunity to ask questions, go over riding form, and learn the equipment (like our Matrix bikes). They’ll show you how to use the bike’s computer and set up your bike. Each bike has easy-to-read numbers for the seat and handlebars so all you have to do is remember your setup numbers for next time. A good instructor (which Elite has plenty of) will lay out a plan for the class to make it challenging for all levels and an enjoyable experience for all.

2. Indoor cycling is very accessible.

All you really need is a good attitude and a water bottle (it’s important to stay hydrated!). If you do decide to commit to regular classes, I recommend cycling shorts for comfort and if you’re really committed, cleated shoes. However, neither are necessary to enjoy the class.

3. Indoor cycling is a great form of cardio exercise.

Indoor cycling can be a great addition to anyone’s fitness program. Depending on the class goal (and your goal that day), it can be either an aerobic endurance workout, or a high intensity interval workout. It is a great complement to walking or running, Yoga, and strength training. If you continuously come to indoor cycling class, you’ll burn calories and lose weight while toning your leg muscles.

4. No reservations are needed.

Although the number of bikes are limited in every class, you don’t need to sign up in advance. Be sure to get there early enough to claim the bike you want. Pretend you’re back in school. A new rider might want to be “hidden” in the back and there’s nothing wrong with that. All instructors wear microphone headsets so hearing them won’t be a problem. With the classroom-like setup, every bike has a clear view of the instructor as well. Do you like to be in front or in the back? The choice is yours!

5. Indoor cycling is something different for everybody.

Make it what you want it to be. Indoor cycling is a challenge by choice. Some come for a fun ride and the comradery of a group exercise class. Others are there to raise their watts/kilograms and bring their best effort to each and every class. Whatever your goal is, indoor cycling could be right for you!
