Hydration Isn’t Just for Summer

winter hydration

Most people only consider hydration to be important during warm summer months. However, staying hydrated in winter is just as important. Your body may be losing more moisture than you realize, and you can prevent dry, itchy skin. Here are some winter hydration tips.

Dehydration in Winter

Dehydration in winter is very common. Dehydration occurs when your body loses more water than it takes in. Low humidity in winter causes dry, flaky, and/or itchy skin. Less moisture in the air means less water for our bodies to absorb through the skin. Another cause for dehydration in winter is sweating. With extra layers, we tend to perspire more without even realizing it.

Why Hydration is Important

Our bodies are made up of over 60% water. Your body depends on water to transport nutrients, maintain homeostasis, hydrating tissues and organs, expel waste, etc. Because your body needs water to regulate your temperature, staying adequately hydrated will prevent you from getting cold. Hydrating from the inside will also help prevent your skin from drying out.

Winter Hydration Tips

The best way to stay hydrated throughout the day is making sure you drink enough water. It’s best to carry a refillable water bottle with you wherever you go. If you’re the forgetful type, have multiple water bottles in various locations so you have one with you at all times. Keep one at home, in the car, in your gym bag, and in the office.

How much water is enough? As a general guideline, the Institute of Medicine recommends the total water intake for men and wommen is 3.7 L and 2.7 L, respectively. These numbers include the totals that come from beverages (such as plain water, milk, sports drinks, etc.), which are 3.0 L for men and 2.2 L for women. The remaining capacity can come from foods such as fruits and vegetables, which have high water content. These totals can vary depending on age, physical activity, illness, etc.

Another way to hydrate your skin is by using a humidifier at home or in the office. They pump water vapor into the air to increase the amount of moisture. This is especially a great way to help with dry skin or if you suffer from frequent nose bleeds.
