Today’s the day, you tell yourself. Today’s the day that you are going to commit to getting fit and healthy. But there’s just one teensy, tiny problem: You don’t quite know HOW to become fit and healthy.
No worries, don’t sweat it. We’re here to help. We’ll start you off with a few pointers on how to get fit and why it’s important to be healthy. Bonus: We are here to help along the way, and if we don’t say so ourselves, we’re a pretty darn good support system.
Find your kryptonite.
Chances are this isn’t your first try at committing to be fit and healthy. If you’ve tried to get fit in the past and strayed off course before you reached your goals, it’s important to know why. Did you get too busy with work and life? Get bored? Didn’t know which exercises to do? Expect too much too quick? Just didn’t like it? Whatever the reason, identify it. Figure out exactly what made you stop before and then figure out how you’re going to avoid it this time around.
Set goals.
Set super specific, really realistic goals. Write them down and plan them out. If you can’t create a good plan to reach your goal, chances are the goal is unrealistic. Example: losing 20 pounds in a week’s time isn’t gonna happen. If it’s been quite some time since you’ve exercised, perhaps setting a goal of walking the treadmill three times per week for 15 minutes would be a great one to start with. If you’re very active but aren’t seeing the results you want, maybe your goal should have to do with setting nutritional boundaries for yourself. Whenever you reach a set of goals, write down and plan out another set.
Clean up your diet.
Remember the old saying, “You are what you eat”? On some levels, it’s true. Much success of a pursuit to become fit and healthy depends on what you’re eating. Just remember, when you’re making changes to your diet, be subtle about it. Vow to incorporate more vegetables in your meals this week and cut out sweets next week. Making small changes will help you stick with it, and lead to bigger successes in the long run. For a few tips on eating healthier, check out this blog post.
Do what you love.
Find exercises that you love and incorporate them into your regular workout routine. Like lifting weights? Awesome, hit the gym and start pumping iron. Enjoy running? Excellent, go pound the pavement or hit the treadmill. Love being around other people? Incredible, sign up for group fitness classes. Whatever your pleasure, mix it into your routine as much as you can. The more you love what you are doing, the more motivated you’ll be to keep reaching your fitness goals.
