Some things run in the family, and sports is certainly one of them. Tennis is one of those generational sports. At the clubs, you’ll find a number of families that have several generations of tennis players. By playing together as a family, your children will also take an interest in what you love, and perhaps they’ll continue to pass it on one day.
All in the Family
One could argue that any sport is generational, as the apple tends to not fall far from the tree. It’s common for kids to look up to their parents and emulate what they do. Just by spending time with their parents, the kids will take an interest in the activities with which their parents are involved.
Tennis might be different in that it’s an easy sport to learn at any age, and there are few barriers to entry. You really don’t even need to have access to a court to get started. Hitting a ball against a wall is a great way to practice the basics. After all, the wall is an opponent that never misses. Tennis doesn’t require extreme physical fitness either, but it is a great sport to play to be active.
Tennis is a sport that can be played together as a family as well. If your immediate family has 4 or more members, you can play doubles matches and rotate playing partners. If your extended family members play, you can host a family-wide tournament and compete for bragging rights.
Pass It Along
Even if you’re the first in your family to play tennis, try passing it along to your kids. A great way to gauge their interest is by playing it with them. Elite Sports Clubs regularly hosts Family Tennis events through our all-inclusive Monthly Family Calendar. These programs are included with family memberships. Play fun tennis games with your kids so they can learn and get a feel for the game at a young age. If they want to continue, group tennis lessons would be a great next step, furthering their skills and granting the opportunity to make new friends in the local tennis community.
The more involved you are with your child’s tennis journey, the more they will want to play. Their passion will grow and perhaps one day, they will do the same with their kids. Thus, tennis becomes a generational sport.
