Instructor Highlight - Sarah Sullivan

Some of you may know Sarah Sullivan as the Aquatics Director at our Elite Sports Club – River Glen location. She’s actively involved in the maintenance and scheduling of the indoor and outdoor saltwater pools, and manages all of our lifeguards and swim lessons at that location. Core Exercises for Runners

With summer fast approaching and the weather starting to get nicer, people are going to be heading outside to start running more in the fresh air. Some will run just for exercise for fun, or for training for a 5k, triathlon, marathon, challenge course, etc. But no matter your distance and skill level of running, keeping a your body strong will also be important.

Can You Count on Food Expiration Dates?

Food Expiration Dates, what do they mean? And are they reliable? Many people do think so and I know that it is taught in school curriculums that children learn to double check labels as to not eat “spoiled” foods. I recently experienced this firsthand when my granddaughters wanted to check the cottage cheese carton before having some. They said, “we are close to the date of expiration”and “we don’t want to eat any.” They smelled it but decided they would not eat it. I was a little surprised at their quick assessment and also at the realization that just maybe I would have something that’s not healthy in my refrigerator!

Why There's No Such Thing as the Best Exercise

Last week we discussed the new and intriguing field of “nutrigenetics“, and how all of us, while we share a lot in common, do have individual differences in how our bodies respond to food, exercise, and other environmental factors. This week, I want to emphasize that in exercise, there’s no “one size fits all” solution. There is no one best exercise, there are lots of different types of cardio, weight lifting strategies, combination workouts and sports that people either naturally gravitate to, or find over time. As a trainer, I find that people come in with sets of issues, and it’s my job to navigate those to find not only the safest workout, but also the most palatable. And it needs to produce results! This can be a challenge, as you might imagine.

Elite's Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie - A Meal in a Cup

Last Saturday, our dietetic intern, Sarah Brunner and I visited with Pam Koch about the new and improved ingredients for the smoothie drinks available at the eCafé at Elite Sports Club – Mequon, as well as the other Elite clubs. We wanted to see for ourselves. Pam, the general manager, made a tasty favorite of hers called the “Dirty Peanut” (now listed as the Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie).
