Member Stories: Geoff Mykleby – Successful Swimming

Member Stories - Geoff Mykleby – Successful Swimming

We’re extremely proud of our members. Over the years their work out agendas and sporting endeavors serve as healthy examples of how it feels to be “Elite,” and how exercise not only adds years to your life, but life to your years! Today we’d like to highlight another member’s experience:

Geoff Mykleby has been a long-time member of Elite Sports Clubs with his wife Kathy. A regular swimmer for most of his life, Geoff still competes at a high level after training hard at the clubs. Learn about some of his latest triumphs on the national stage!

Geoff Mykleby Just Keeps Swimming

  1. When did you become a member?

I joined Elite-Brookfield (then known as the Highlander) in the mid-80’s. My wife Kathy was a member initially.

  1. What made you become a member?

We were friends with one of the staff members and her daughter (Ann and Molly Miehe) who my wife knew from her days living in Iowa.

  1. How do you use the club?

My wife does tennis, weight and cardio training (with Ann Tremmel), and swims. I just swim and used to play basketball until Highlander Elite member (and fellow University of Iowa alum) Dr. William McDevitt informed me that I was TOO OLD to play. I took his advice and went back to only swimming.

  1. How long have you been swimming?

I started swimming competitively back in the early 60’s as an 8-year-old.

  1. How did you get involved/qualify for the US Masters Nationals?

I took 25 years off from competitive swimming after swimming in college at North Carolina State and started up again by first swimming in ocean races in Hawaii (Maui Channel Swim). I then slowly progressed into pool swimming in the late 90’s and started to swim more intensely to the point where I won my first national title back in 2003.

  1. What are some of your recent swimming triumphs?

I recently participated in the MASTERS PAN-AMERICAN GAMES in Orlando Florida. I swam against swimmers from North and South America. I got two second places and a 3rd. Those times are currently TOP TEN in the WORLD! Last May, at the US NATIONALS in Indianapolis, I won a national title in the Men’s 65-69 50 Backstroke and was a member of TEAM WISCONSIN that won the overall team title.

  1. How did you train/prepare for the event?

I swim 1500-2000 yards … 5 times a week.

  1. What advice would you give to someone like you looking to get more active in swimming?

Swimming is the most complete exercise there is because water is RESISTANCE! Start slow and work on technique…don’t focus JUST on yardage! Join a certified Masters team in your area or hire a private instructor. Also, watch Youtube videos of World Champions (Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky) and get tips on stroke technique.
